The data from 1980 to 1990 are derived from ‘General Elections in Western Nations’, an annual summary of election statistics compiled for the European Journal of Political Research by Thomas T. Mackie and Richard Rose from 1980 to 1983, and by Thomas T. Mackie from 1984 to 1990. The data from 1991 to 2007 are derived from the European Journal of Political Research's annual ‘Political Data Yearbook’. These sources are hereinafter referred to as the ‘Political Data Yearbooks’.
The main data source is Eurostat (the Statistical Office of the European Commission), complemented, where necessary, by other appropriate national and international sources. Authoritative official statistics are available from Eurostat's online database, including the latest revisions to historical data. Consistency with data at the national level from AMECO is also ensured.
